Getting Started

This wiki is no longer being edited or updated. For up-to-date information about Learner Web in Minnesota, please instead see https://sites.google.com/site/mnlearnerweb/ and update all bookmarks accordingly.

Make sure you understand what Learner Web is.

Contact Jen Vanek, Learner Web Administrator for Minnesota, to talk about Learner Web. You can also check out the Learner Web infosite and our local site.

Think about who will use it.

Learner Web is based on the idea that adult learners often want to work independently toward reaching learning goals, but are not always aware of the best resources to help them reach those goals. The Learner Web takes free resources available to learners and provides a structure to organize them in a way that makes them easier for learners to access. As learners move through a learning plan, they navigate between the Learner Web and many other websites.

NOTE:  This set up requires a basic understanding of web navigation.  If learners are new to the internet, this may be difficult.  Learners who are just beginning to be literate AND who are new to computers will have a very difficult time using Learner Web independently.

There are many different learning plans available in Minnesota, representing different content and skill levels. Click here to see what is currently offered.

Think about how you will offer it.

Learner Web is intended to be used as a Distance Learning tool. It is not software to be used in class or in classroom lab time (if you take attendance for lab time).  MN Department of Education Adult Basic Education has approved proxy hours for many of our learning plans. That means that as students show mastery of the content in the learning plans, your program is eligible for sustainable funding for a predetermined number of hours.

The Learner Web CAN be used as a hybrid learning tool. Classroom teachers can offer to support learners using Learner Web learning plans that are complementary to classroom content. The Learner Web cannot be used as homework in such a class, rather it must be offered as an extra class, done on the learner's time outside of class.

See the Learner Web Policies page for more information about the differences between hybrid and independent distance learning.

Think about who will run it.

Each site that uses Learner Web needs to have an in-house Learner Web expert. This person will coordinate the site's implementation and communicate with the Minnesota Regional Administrator. Minimally, the local LW coordinator will:

  • Decide whether to use Learner Web as a distance learning or hybrid distance learning/classroom tool.
  • Be informed about learning plan offerings.
  • Invite teachers and learners to participate.
  • Learn how to use the Learner Web tools for keeping track of learner progress.
  • Record Learner Web proxy hours earned into the MN Adult Basic Education (MABE)  or MARCS database.

Learner Web is a role-based software. Each program will use available roles differently, depending on staff, resources, and implementation goals. Learner Web site coordinators can use all the roles or spread them out to other colleagues on-site.

See the Learner Web Roles page to learn more about who does what.

When you're ready for action . . .

Contact the Regional Administrator to request access to the software.

Also, be sure to check out SPCLC Learner Web Policies for more detail about setting up the process.
